However, that may be more appealing than not to some people and either way we’d strongly recommend giving it a go, and keeping an eye out for when the full game sprouts up next month.By clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot'sĪs announced previously, the Garden Warfare 2 beta will offer players access to a scaled-down version of the Backyard Battleground, which is a hub world that acts as a menu and connects players to every map and mode. The character classes and weapons are certainly novel and fun but this is still just a family friendly version of a very familiar concept, rather than being anything fundamentally new. There’s also the fact that despite the amusing façade the game isn’t really doing anything very different. In fact the art style in general is a little too busy for a fast action game like this, and can cause needless confusion.

Aiming stills feels a little vague and imprecise, with not enough feedback in terms of animation to tell you whether you’re hitting anyone. There’s a lot to be impressed by in Garden Warfare 2, but we are concerned that our main complaints about the first game don’t seem to have been fully addressed. As well as a version of King of the Hill to involve yourself in there’s also simpler quests you can pick up, which seemed aimed at the time-strapped gamer who can’t commit to one of the longer modes. This is a great place to try out new characters and tactics, as you only start to run into enemies when you venture closer to their territory. You can customise all of them and there are specific variants that seem to be unlockables, but which were made available at certain points in the beta – such as a Grass Effect (geddit?) mech.īut there’s also Backyard Battleground, a sort of meta game that expands the menu hub areas into a sprawling map where the plants and zombies battle to control the middle ground between their two bases. On the zombie side the newcomers are Super Brainz, a close-combat Superman parody with a hadoken super move Captain Deadbeard and his remote control parrot and Imp and Z-Mech, a fast but weak zombie that can jump into a giant robot when necessary. This works in a way reminiscent of the Star Cards from Star Wars: Battlefront, and although Garden Warfare came first it’s not hard to draw comparisons between the two games. Or there’s the mage-like Rose who can turn enemies into goats, and Kernel Corn who has machine guns for arms (well, arms that shoot corn anyway).Įveryone gets three special abilities, such as the rolling up for Citron or the goat transformation for Rose, that run on a fairly quick cooldown. On the plants’ side we particularly liked Citron, who’s a giant orange that rolls up like a Droideka from The Phantom Menace and can either knock enemies over like bowling pins or use a powerful beam weapon. Up to 24 players compete at once, and this gives you a good chance to try out the six new characters. When we played the latter it took place on a very large map called Seeds Of Time and involved the plants defending their base from attacking zombies. The exact modes available have been changing each day, so we’re not sure what you’ll get today if you log in, but the game has all the obvious shooter classics, including Team Vanquish (Team Deathmatch), Vanquish Confirmed (Kill Confirmed – can you see what they’re doing here?), Gnome Bomb (Search and Destroy), and Suburbination (Domination).Īll of those were in the original game (although Suburbination was DLC), as was Gardens & Graveyards. Zombies, being a straight third person shooter, but many of the characters and attacks are similar. In gameplay terms Garden Warfare has nothing in common with the real Plants Vs.

It’s a spin-off from the popular mobile series of what were essentially Tower Defense games. Zombies is exactly what it sounds like – as ridiculous as that may seem. Just to get you up to speed though, Plants Vs. (But not, sadly, the split screen mode which we’re hoping has been beefed up from the original’s rather limited range of options.) Naturally not all options were available, but there was a generous array of different characters to play as and a wide range of different multiplayer game modes. Since Garden Warfare 2 is out in just over a month what we got to play at the weekend was presumably very close to the finished article.
